CalREN Video Services Site Migration Processes

The Migration Process for UC Sites

This migration process consists of the following steps:

1. Ship gatekeeper to campus:
  • Campus provides IP address and list of subnets to include in zone to CENIC
  • CENIC configures gatekeeper (preliminary)
  • CENIC ships gatekeeper to campus • [ Download PDF Gatekeeper Insert Document ]
2. Install gatekeeper:
3. Test gatekeeper:
  • Campus must configure CODEC to register with gatekeeper
  • Campus must assign 4-digit dialing plan identifier to CODEC • [ See VoIP Dialing Plan ]
  • Campus must connect to CENIC test site • IP Address: 137.164.83.157 • Dialing String: 100 900 1000
4. Scheduling:
  • Campus must identify a primary scheduling contact person and send info to CENIC.
  • This person must complete online scheduler training.
  • Campus must provide CENIC with dial strings of campus codecs.
  • CENIC must update CVS Scheduling Desk software (Polycom Conference Suite) with new campus info.
  • CENIC and Campus must test the scheduling of videoconferences through MCU.

The Migration Process for K12 Sites

The CalREN Video Services (CVS) system is funded in equal shares between the California Community Colleges, California State University, and University of California. The K12 segment has developed a separate video services system through K12video.org. In order to facilitate intersegmental collaboration, we have developed a reciprocity agreement between CVS and K12video.org, allowing sites from each to use the other's services without cost. The technical specifications have been coordinated between the two organizations in order to allow sites transparent access to use both systems.

The following are the steps required for a K12 site to participate in CVS. We would appreciate your cooperation in completing all the steps in this procedure.

1. A copy of your Gatekeeper configuration must be provided to CENIC for documentation purposes. This information will be maintained on a secure, internal server for use by CENIC staff only. This information can be sent via e-mail to SchedDesk@cenic.org.

2. The gatekeeper must be tested to confirm that it operates correctly within the CVS environment. The codecs to be included in CVS must be configured to register with the gatekeeper using the dialing plan identifier (H.323 Extension or E.164) [See VoIP Dialing Plan].

3. Once codecs are configured, contact the CENIC NOC at (714) 220-3494 to test each codec's connection.

4. After successfully testing your codecs, please send the following information to the CVS Scheduling Desk via e-mail to SchedDesk@cenic.org:
  • H.323 Name: This is a name you get to create for the codec or, if the codec is permanently installed in a videoconference room, for the room. It will be used to identify the codec for scheduling purposes in the CVS Scheduling Desk software, so this is how other users will know this codec and/or videoconference room. (Example: CENIC Yosemite Room).
  • H.323 Extension; (E.164) This is the "dialing plan" number you've assigned to the codec.
5. Once all of the codecs you wish to have listed in the scheduler have been tested, an account for the CVS Scheduling Desk may be requested by sending an e-mail request to SchedDesk@cenic.org. Each site may have up to 3 video administrator/coordinators with accounts to the CVS Online Scheduler. Please include your name, email address and telephone number.

Any questions regarding becoming a CVS Participating Site should be directed to CalREN Video Services by phone at (714) 220-3465 or by e-mail to SchedDesk@cenic.org.

  • Campus must send gatekeeper configuration to CENIC.
3. Test gatekeeper:
  • Campus must configure codec to register with gatekeeper.
  • Campus must assign 4-digit dialing plan identifier to CODEC • [ See VoIP Dialing Plan ]
